Barbering services are currently on fire, and with the expected growth in men’s grooming trends, now is a great time to be a barber. We recently sat down with current barbering student, Christopher “Twis” Taylor @twisthebarber to discuss his desire to become a barber and the path that led him to The Institute of Beauty and Wellness. His passion for the industry shows as he balances our 3-day schedule while completing his bachelor’s degree. Hear more of his story below.

How did you become interested in barbering?

I began cutting my own hair about five years ago after going to college which was far away from home. I figured, why keep going home every two weeks for a haircut when I could save money and do it myself?

Tell us more about your previous education.

I am currently enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and will graduate this fall. Being at two different institutions at the same time is very challenging but very much attainable. I decided to go to school for barbering because it caught my interest and I felt I could make a career out of it while pursuing the goal of becoming an entrepreneur.

Why did you choose to attend The Institute of Beauty and Wellness versus other barbering schools?

Aveda [The Institute of Beauty and Wellness] stood out to me from the very start of my process of finding the right school for me. The staff was very approachable and knowledgeable with the questions I had. They made the transition from prospect to student fast, easy, and pleasant.

What do your friends and family think about your decision to attend barbering school?

My friends and family happen to be my biggest supporters with anything I do. So, making the decision to attend barber school was fairly easy. My older brother, who is my biggest supporter and investor, pushed me to make this a reality.  He helped bring forth a passion for something I never knew I had a passion for.

What is the best or most exciting part of your program so far?

The barbering program is amazing! I could not ask for better instructors, classmates and peers. The best and most exciting part so far is getting the hands-on experience – whether it is learning about products, tools or having actual guests. I feel like the more I come in contact with different aspects of barbering, the more I learn each and every day.

Where do you see yourself after graduation?

After graduation I see myself working full-time in a barbershop for about 1-2 years, then I would like to begin the process of owning my own barber shop.

Is there one piece of advice you would give to others thinking about attending barbering school? Do you think it is important for barbers working in the industry to have their license?

The biggest advice I can give is to be committed. Committed to coming to school, perfecting your craft and getting better each and every day. It is very important to have a license. That is why we have beautiful institutions like Aveda to make sure we achieve that goal of being a licensed professional.

What is your favorite Aveda product? Any tips on how to use it?
My favorite Aveda product happens to be the pomade from the Aveda Men’s collection. I apply it to damp hair. It is great for a medium hold and shine and is perfect to keep specific wave pattern in textured hair.

Any other thoughts/comments on your program at IBW?
The people here at IBW make my program very enjoyable on a day-to-day basis. Everyone is willing to help each other and take on daily challenges. It is a great environment.
